about

Dedicated to my grandad, born December 24th, 1936 in Spaulding, England and died December 3rd, 2019 in Ohio, USA. The recording comes from December 24th, 2018, his very last birthday. He had Alzheimer’s and wasn’t holding conversation much anymore. But opening birthday presents with family must have lit something up. He opened a gift, a bag of coffee, and read the description aloud: “Balanced and nutty.” He looked around the room with a twinkle in his eye and a knowing smile. It was the last joke he ever cracked and I was lucky enough to capture his voice in the moment. This one’s for you, Grandad!

<3

Some of the things I remember my grandad for:
- Schoolboy mischief
- Making fun of toffee-nosed gits (the upper classes)
- Making fun of Nazis, including those whose bombings he miraculously survived as a child
- Convincing unwitting American children that he was personal friends with the Queen of England and that she used to let him do his laundry at Buckingham Palace
- Being a bell-ringer
- Gardening and related activities, such as doing battle with a deranged cardinal who became his personal nemesis
- Being incredibly well-read despite not having access to higher education
- Collecting gadgets
- Using Clip Art and Microsoft Paint to send silly letters to his grandchildren
- Shaking presents and trying to guess what they were before opening them
- Being retired from his job selling farm equipment
- Buttering his toast with extreme thoroughness and precision
- Playing the Great Game of Britain
- Referring to his wife, my grandmother, as She Who Must Be Obeyed
